A Bear Climbed Half Dome in Yosemite

Yosemite National Park has said that evidence of a black bear has been found on top of the iconic peak

Yosemite National Park rangers have said that evidence of black bears climbing Yosemite’s Half Dome has been found. Half Dome is one of California’s most popular and often-climbed summits.

Between 300 and 500 black bears live in Yosemite, and are often found in meadows at lower elevations. However, Yosemite National Park recently said, “Rangers recently discovered evidence of a black bear’s presence on the summit of Half Dome. Yosemite bears are excellent climbers and can easily tackle the 46-degree angle — no cables needed!”

To reach the top of Half Dome requires climbing hundreds of metres of granite slabs, which hikers do via fixed cables that were installed in 1920 by the Sierra Club. Reservations are required to hike the cable route.

Yosemite National Park cautions visitors to keep their distance from bears in underdeveloped areas. No one has ever been killed or seriously injured by a Yosemite black bear, according to the park.
