A Tragedy is Unfolding in the Himalaya

Two climbers have died and two are still missing after an avalanche on Shishapangma

A tragedy is unfolding in the Himalaya as two climbers have died and two are missing on Shishapangma. Two Americans in a race to become the first woman to summit the 14 8,000-metre peaks have been hit by large avalanches.

The Himalayan Times has reported that American Anna Gutu and her guide Mingmar Sherpa have died, while American Gina Marie and her guide Tenjen (Lama) Sherpa are missing. Tenjen Lama is the record-setting guide who accompanied Kristin Harila up the 14 8,000-metre peaks in 92 days this year.

“Kami Rita Sherpa, Mitra Bahadur Tamang and Karma Gyalzen Sherpa were injured in the incident,” The Himalayan Times noted. Those in the area say that two avalanches struck the climbers, who were above 7,000 metres.

This is a developing story that we’ll update as soon as more information is available. Our condolences to the families and friends of those killed in this avalanche.
