Brooke Raboutou Climbs a V16, Grades it V15

Her send of Box Therapy came on the same day that her brother, Shawn Raboutou, also climbed it

Brooke Raboutou and her brother Shawn Raboutou have sent Box Therapy, a line first climbed by Daniel Woods at V16. “Shawn and I managed to do the ultimate dream: sibling send of Box Therapy, same day, back-to-back tries,” Brooke said on Instagram along with a personal grade of V15.

About her grade suggestion, she said, “Grades are tricky because they truly are subjective and can feel different for everyone. Here’s my opinion: after chatting with my brother and others who have done the climb, I feel like V15 is an appropriate grade especially if I compare it to some of the benchmark V15’s I’ve tested.”

The boulder takes two hours to reach and is at an altitude of 3,169 metres. It’s a sit start to Tommy Caldwell’s problem Spread Eagle V11. It was most recently climbed in September by Katie Lamb, who noted that she felt it was V16 – read her post here. Drew Ruana and Sean Bailey had also climbed Box Therapy, with neither suggesting on record that they felt it was easier than V16. Earlier this year, before Katie Lamb’s send, Shawn Raboutou told Magnus Midtbø that his sister Brooke had nearly climbed Box Therapy in a day, watch the video here (starts two minutes in), and that Brooke believes that it might be easier than V16.

In 2016, Ashima Shiraishi became the first female, and youngest climber ever, to climb V15 with her repeat of Horizon. Katie Lamb and Brooke Raboutou had both climbed several V14 problems before sending Box Therapy.
