Climbers Head to Remote and Bold Objectives

From the Karakoram to Baffin Island to Peru, here are a few expeditions taking place this summer

As we head into the first month of summer, climbers around the world are heading into some remote objectives. Top British climber Leo Houlding is off to Baffin Island with Wilson Cutbirth and Waldo Etherington. Houlding climbed and BASE jumped off Mount Asgard in 2009 with the late Sean “Stanley Leary.”

Experienced Polish alpinist Andrzej Bargiel is heading to Pakistan to climb and ski Gasherbrum I and II. In 2018, he made history by making the first ski descent of K2. Gasherbrum I was first skied in 1982, it was the first 8,000-metre peak to be descended on skis.

Simon Messner and Martin Sieberer are heading to the Karakoram to attempt to climb Yermanendu Kangri, which is one of the highest unclimbed mountains on earth at 7,163 metres. They nearly abandoned their plans after waiting for three months to get their visas, but everything has come together for a summer expedition.

And Jonathan Sage, who’s based in the Canadian Rockies, is currently in the Peruvian Andes. Read about his most recent climbs in a post from earlier this week.
