Climbers Lineup on Everest to Start Season

Climbers are reaching the tops of the world's highest mountains in the Himalaya, here are a few highlights this week

The spring Himalayan climbing season is in full swing as climbers summit several famous peaks, including a rope-fixing team to the summit of Everest via the North Col route. The ropes up the popular South Col route have not yet been fixed to the summit.

On Makalu, 18-year-old Nima Rinji and his guides recently summited as the first team of the year to do so. Rinji has climbed 12 of the 14 8,000-metre peaks, as he hopes to become the first teenager to climb all 14. One of the two peaks that he must still climb is Shisha Pangma, however it’s not currently open to foreign climbers. Also on Makalu, Australian Allie Pepper summited this week without supplemental oxygen. Pepper will now turn her focus to Kangchenjunga, as she’s hoping to climb all 14 8,000-metres peaks without supplemental oxygen.

On the Tibet-Nepal border, an expedition of Korean and Nepalese climbers have reached the summit of Jugal I (6,591 m). They now plan to attempt Jugal II (6,518 m). Both peaks were closed to climbing until recently. The climbers who summited include Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, Um Hong-gil, Babu Lama, Joung Je Gyun, Kim Dong Jin, Koo Eun Soo, and Baek Jong Min.

Longtime Himalayan climber Tenzi Sherpa has been pushing climbers to carry out their waste, “I have never seen these big mountaineers and influencers carrying [out] their own waste.” He hinted that the people raising money via online campaigns to clean the environment around Everest aren’t following through. Watch a recent video by Tenzi showing a lineup on Everest this week below.
