Drew Ruana Climbing Ice Knife Sit V16 in the US

The veteran boulderer just dropped an uncut video of his second ascent of this test-piece

In 2022, Drew Ruana made the second ascent of Ice Knife Sit V16 at Guanella Pass in Colorado. By last spring, he’d climbed 10 V16s. Ruana just dropped an uncut video of his send of Ice Knife Sit, watch below.

Daniel Woods made the first ascent of Ice Knife Sit in 2013, saying, “The sit adds in a powerful and awkward four move V12 into the V14 with no rest. The style of this boulder is different than anything I have climbed on. The holds require good friction and the movement is off balance and weird.” It took Ruana over 30 sessions to repeat it.

Ruana was born into a climbing family and started at a young age. He developed a passion for all styles, from multi-pitch adventures to competitions. At 15 years old, he climbed Just do It at Smith Rock, the first 5.14c in America. “I’m drawn to just seeing how far I can push myself in bouldering, especially because in the last couple of years, I have not been able to give it as much attention as I wanted to, and I’m still doing hard boulders,” Ruana told us earlier this year in this interview.

“It’d be cool to have a few V17s under my belt at that point and maybe even be close to some harder boulders as well. Just have to see what happens. I used to put too much pressure on myself and finally learned how to take that pressure off, and it makes me enjoy climbing a lot more.”
