Famed Italian Guide Dies on Mont Paramont

One of Italy's most accomplished ski mountaineers, Denis Trento, was found dead after going out alone

Italian climber and ski champion Denis Trento has been found dead on Monte Paramont (3,301 m) in Italy after what officials believe was an accidental fall. He was 41 years old.

On the morning of May 3, Trento’s family raised the alarm after he did not return home after a solo ski mission. The Valdostan mountain rescue team found his body at the base of the north face near signs of an avalanche. He was wearing crampons at the time of the accident, which means that he was still ascending and not yet skiing. According to the Valle d’Aosta’s avalanche bulletin, conditions were considerable above 2,600 meters.

Born in Aosta in 1982, Trento went on to become a legendary ski mountaineer who regularly podiumed in difficult events, winning the Team World Championships in 2008 and 2011. He also won gold at the European Championships in 2007 and 2009. He won most major ski mountaineering events, such as the Mezzalama Tropy, Tour du Rutor, Pierra Menta and the Adamello Ski Raid.

In a remembrance shared by Planet Mountain here, Nicholas Hobley said, “Trento was one of those people who exuded safety and confidence and, although he could have been, he was not at all full of himself. On the contrary, he was far too humble. The first time he introduced himself to us he stated “My name is Denis Trento, I’m a mountain guide and I was a pretty good ski mountaineering athlete.”
