Ice Climbers Are Falling More – Another Rescue

It used to be rare to hear about ice climbers taking lead falls, but it's happening more often than in previous years

The old saying in ice climbing is that the first rule of the sport is to never fall, but over the past few weeks we’ve heard reports of around a dozen big falls, some that have resulted in rescues. A few were even caught on camera.

Most recently, an ice climber took a 10-metre fall while climbing Repentance at the popular Cathedral Ledge this past weekend. New Hampshire Fish and Game said here that 21-year-old Ryan Cooper from Alabama was transported to Memorial Hospital in Conway for a leg injury.

Earlier this month, a 38-year-old ice climber took a fall while climbing in Keene Valley of the Adirondacks. Rescuers set up a low-angle rope rescue system and lowered him several hundred feet to an ambulance and he was flown to the University of Vermont Medical Center by a LifeNet helicopter.

Over the past few days, more videos have been popping up on social media documenting ice climbers taking lead falls. For some ice climbing tips on how to have a safe day out, visit here. See two videos of ice climbers falling over the past few days below.
