New 5.14c is Hardest Climb at Mount Arapiles

Light Weight Baby is the first-ever 5.14c climbed at the popular Australian crag, which is also where the first-ever 5.14 was established

Ben Cossey, 40, has made the first ascent of Light Weight Baby at Mount Arapiles in Australia. Cossey graded it 5.14c, which makes it the hardest climb at the famous crag.

The project was bolted by Sean Myles back in the early 1990s. Over the years, several top climber had tried it, including Fred Nicole and Jerry Moffatt.

“I’m not sure if you guys get it in Europe, but the wind at Arapilies, the way it whistles around the cliff crevices make a sound like it’s whispering “Wolfgang,” which is pretty amazing really,” Cossey said on 8a.nu. Wolfgang Gullich famously established Punks in the Gym at Arapiles in 1985, a route which Cossey said is in sight of the start of Light Weight Baby.

Cossey said the the first time he laid eyes on the route was when he was 15, noting that “it sat there, indifferent ever since, like it’s been doing since the dawn of time, waiting to be done. Now it is.”
