Nirmal Purja Climbs 45th 8,000-metre Summit

He continues to add to his world record for climbing the most 8,000-metre peaks of any climber ever

Veteran Himalayan climber Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja just reached the summit of an 8,000-metre peak for his 45th time with a successful ascent of Makalu. He’s now climbed Makalu, the world’s fifth highest mountain, four times.

Purja shared the news on Instagram, saying that he made the ascent without supplemental oxygen and without acclimatization. Of his 45 ascents, 21 have been done without supplemental oxygen. The climber with the next most ascents of 8,000-metre summits is Kami Rita Sherpa with 38. “Never let anyone tell you that you are not possible,” Purja said on Instagram. “Believe in your dreams, keep working hard, keep pushing those limitations!”

In 2019, Purja climbed all 14 8,000-metre peaks in six months and six days, an accomplishment featured in the film 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible. Last year, Nepali guide Tenjen Sherpa broke Purja’s record by guiding all 14 peaks in just 92 days with his client Norwegian climber Kristin Harila.

There are currently around 2,500 climbers in Everest base camp awaiting to climb fixed ropes to the summit of the world’s highest mountain, read more about it here.
