Watch Alex Honnold Free-Solo 290 Pitches in Squamish

He took the birthday challenge to the next level in only 16 hours

On Aug. 17, 2014 Alex Honnold celebrated his 29th birthday by soloing 290 pitches over the course of one day. In only 16 hours, Honnold averaged a climb every few minutes.

“Some of the routes have been kind of wet, but it hasn’t been a problem. Oh, this is gross. This is the 5.10c direct, which I’ve never actually done before… I’m getting my money’s worth,” Honnold said on the Apron.

He soloed 162 pitches on the Apron, about 5,000 metres of climbing by lunch. In the afternoon, he climbed another 138 pitches at the Smoke Bluffs.
