Less Theft Result of Skaha Park Watch

In the spring of 2016, Skaha Bluffs Park Watch Society began to patrol the parking area at the popular B.C. climbing crag. This past weekend, climbers and locals gathered to celebrate the success of the program. “Since the inception of the program in April of 2016 we have had zero break ins,” said Rolf Rybak, president and founder of the society. “So today is an appreciation day for everyone who has supported the program including all outdoor enthusiasts, local businesses, the RCMP, Parks BC and the Penticton council.”

Vehicle break-ins were at an all-time high when Rybak decided to start the society in 2015. The crime had stopped visitors and climbers from heading to the Pentiction-area park. The city helped with funding for the seven-day-a-week monitors to deter bad behaviour. “It has been great,” said Rybak. “We are supplying opportunities for people with barriers, have stopped the crime problem here and brought tourism back to local businesses. This is like a win win for everyone involved. And the climbers, hikers and mountain bikers have shown great appreciation for what we are doing. We’ve also raised $5,000 from donations in the parking lot.”

On the weekend, Climbers’ Access Society of BC was on hand to support the society and promote positive access. Mayor Andrew Jakubeit and MLA Dan Ashton were on hand. “This park program has been very successful,” said Jakubeit. “We haven’t had the crime we had last year and people are coming.” For more info on the park watch visit here.
