The Welsford Rendezvous, a climbing festival in New Brunswick that started in 2016, took place last weekend with great success. The event is run by Ascent New Brunswick at a number of locations.

There are a number of comps at the event, including Sunnyside Throwdown (teams of two send as many routes as they can), Points Challenge (climb up to 12 routes of your choice and collect as many points as you can, based on a scoring system), Three Crags (climb one route at each of the original three crags in Welsford moving between by some form of non motorized transport, best time wins), and Cochrane Lane Classics (teams climb as many of the select 13 routes from the original guide book written by Colin Bell in 1978).

Greg Hughes and Michel Martin set a new speed time in the Cochrane Lane Classics after climbing 13 of the original routes, totalling 17 pitches on 10 walls, in five hours and 51 minutes.

Hughes said, “Colin put up some uber classic routes at the cliff in a very bold style back before cams were around and paved the way for future generations.”

The routes Hughes and Martin climbed were: Kitcat 5.4, Gollums Cave 5.6, Reindeer Land 5.4, Ejaculator 5.7, Jean 5.5, Cheekbone Corner 5.7, Ride a Cock Horse 5.5, Snot 5.8, Snot 5.8, Waterfall Layback 5.9, Pink Panther 5.10a, Light Fandango 5.6, The Boulevard 5.6 and Some Enchanted Evening 5.6.
