Acephale Closed Due to Ongoing Wildfire

Along with a number of other climbing areas along the Trans Canada Highway

A wildfire has been burning close to Dead Man’s Flats east of Canmore for the past few days. The fire forced crews to close the Trans Canada Highway a number of times over the weekend.

Firefighters have managed to cut the fire back from 10 hectares to six, and it’s not expected to grow. Alberta Wildfire says crews continue to extinguish hotspots with the help of helicopters.

A large area south of Highway 1 from Wind Valley to Razor’s Edge, with all day use areas, trails, and surrounding areas closed. This includes the parking and trails into Acephale and Heart Creek. Other areas closed, include: Wind Valley Day Use and associated trails, McGillivray parking lot and associated trails, including climbing trails and the canyon, Jewell Pass Trail and Razor’s Edge Trail.

Acephale is one of Canada’s busiest crags for 5.13 and 5.14 climbers, with a number of classics, such as Existence Mundane, Endless Summer, Army Ants and Prime Time.
