American Climbs the World’s 14 Highest Peaks

Chris Warner has joined Ed Viestrus on the short list of climbers who've summited the 14 8,000-metre peaks

Chris Warner climbed Manaslu this week and became only the second American to climb all 14 8,000-metre peaks. Manaslu is the world’s eighth highest mountain at 8,163 metres and there are over 300 climbers with permits to climb it this year. Warner started his journey to climb the 14 peaks with an ascent of Cho Oyu 24 years ago.

In 2005, Ed Viesturs became the first American, and only the 12th climber in history, to climb the 14 8,000-metre peaks. He was the fifth climber to do so without using supplemental oxygen. Warner climbed some of the 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen, but others, like Manaslu, with it.

At the end of the 1990s, Warner established new routes on Ama Dablam and Shivling, and 16 years ago became the ninth American to summit both Everest and K2. On K2 he climbed without supplemental oxygen and without the support from the local Sherpa.

Warner and his guide Chirring Sherpa climbed 1,500 metres on their Manaslu summit day and were back in base camp before lunch.
