American Sets Crazy Fast New World Record
Sam Watson from Texas has set a new world record for the sport of speed climbing
American Sam Watson has set a new world record at today’s Wujian Speed Climbing event. He climbed the route in an incredible time of 4.79 seconds, which bested his previous world record of 4.85 seconds, which he made during the same event.
In 2022, he won a gold medal at the IFSC Edinburgh World Cup, becoming the youngest climber to do so. At the 2023 Pan American Games, Watson won the gold medal and qualified in speed climbing for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
As a youth climber, Watson won a silver medal at the 2022 Youth B category of the IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships in Russia. In 2022, he won a bronze medal at the Youth A category of the IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships in Texas. He also won the US National Speed Climbing Championship in 2022.
The world record for the fastest speed climbing time at the Olympics was set Bassa Mawem in Tokyo last year at 5.48 seconds. We’ll see if Watson can raise the bar at the Olympics this summer. The current world record for women was set by Aleksandra MirosÅ‚aw at 6.24 seconds.
