Aug 10, 2009 – Riccardo Cassin (1909 – 2009)

The famous Italian alpinist Riccardo Cassin passed away on August 6 in his home in Northern Italy. During his climbing career, Cassin established an impressive list of alpine ascents including the narrow miss of the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger and the first ascent of the Walker Spur on the Grandes Jorasses, which at the time was one of the last great problems in the Alps. Cassin also left his mark on North America with the first ascent of the now legendary Cassin Ridge on Denali. More details here.
