Caldwell, Honnold on Big American Adventure

The two are currently on a multi-week trip cycling from Colorado to Alaska

Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold are on a 3,000-kilometre bike ride on what Caldwell describes as “likely to become our biggest adventure, at least in terms of calorie expenditure.”

In June, Honnold told an audience at the Sheffield DocFest in the U.K., “The two of us are biking from his house in Colorado to Alaska, undertaking a few very large, difficult climb objectives along the way. So, it’s basically a 2,000-mile bike ride with quite a bit of hard climbing, culminating in a difficult climb in Alaska.” Honnold said that the trip was Caldwell’s idea, one that he’s been dreaming up for a while. A source close to Honnold and Caldwell told us they’ll be stopping at the Bugaboos to climb, if the weather is good.

The expedition will be filmed for a project tentatively titled The Last Frontier. Bengt Anderson with National Geographic, said, “In a nutshell, we’re following two really close friends on a big buddy expedition this summer, giant expedition up into Alaska and the Tongass National Forest. It’s gonna be something pretty special.”

Caldwell and Honnold are known for their bold ascents together and with other teams. In 2015, they received a Piolet d’Or for their five-day, seven-summit traverse of the Fitz Roy massif in Patagonia. They have a MasterClass on climbing, and have appeared in several films together, including A Line Across the Sky and Cuddle.
