Unfortunately poor weather conditions prevented a completely free ascent. Eternal Flame was first climbed by Wolfgang Gullich and Kurt Albert in 1989 and is considered to be one of finest big wall rock routes in the world.

The route was eventfully freed in August 2009 by Alex and Thomas Huber who gave it a free grade of 5.13a.
