Experienced Alpinist Dies in Kyrgyzstan

Evgeniy Glazunov was descending after having soloed a 1,000-metre north face in winter

Russian alpinist Evgeniy Glazunov has died on Ak-Su (5,355 m) in the Pamir-Alai mountain range of Kyrgyzstan during his descent from the summit.

Glazunov was on his way down after having soloed the Chaplinsky Route up the 1,000-metre north face in winter. He had contacted his team informing them of success and saying that he was going to descend the route that he’d climbed, but that bad weather was coming in.

The news of his death was shared by Anna Piunova, a longtime climber and journalist, who was helping to coordinate the rescue. “He was almost down, only one-pitch-and-a-half above the base of the face,” Piunova said.

Glazunov was found by four climbers who had travelled to the mountain with climbing gear and a drone in search of him. Glazunov was a highly accomplished climber with many first ascents to his name, many of them done solo.
