Free Solo Wins Oscar for Best Documentary Feature

Free Solo featuring Alex Honnold's legendary climb on El Capitan has won an Academy Award 2019

Free Solo featuring Alex Honnold free soloing El Capitan via Freerider 5.13 has won best documentary feature at the Oscars 2019. Honnold wore a custom tuxedo designed by The North Face design manager Mona Al-Shaalan for the big night. The suit features a stretch cotton poplin shirt and a minimalist jacquard pocket square and bow tie.

“I really value Alex as an athlete and his personal achievements,” Al-Shaalan said. “It’s an honour to be nominated to work on his first ever tuxedo. The fact that this design is in line with our brands premium lifestyle vision is energizing. It’s definitely a passion project for me.” Free Solo was directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and can now add Academy Award winner to the long list of awards it’s received, including recently winning best documentary feature at the British film awards.

Acceptance Speech

“Oh shit,” Chin said as he accepted the award, dropping the first curse word of the night. “Thank you, National Geographic, for hiring women and people of colour; it only makes film better,” Chai Vasarhelyi added. They thanked everyone who worked on the film and added, “It was a work of an army, and we appreciate you in every way. Thank you, Alex Honnold, for giving us courage, teaching us to believe in the impossible, and inspiring us.”
