Honnold Climbs “Astroman” of Washington

He and his climbing partner linked 6 amazing rock climbs in a 15-hour push

Alex Honnold is at it again, this time in the Cascade Mountains of Washington where he and Scott Bennett linked six classic granite spires in a 15-hour day.

Together, they climbed Tooth and Claw 5.12- on Lexington, the East Face 5.10 of the Minuteman, Freedom or Death into the Liberty Cracks 5.12 on Liberty Bell, North Face on Concord, West Face 5.10 on North Early Winter Spire, and finally the seven-pitch The Passenger 5.11+ on South Early Winter Spire. The Passenger is considered the Astroman of Washington, Astroman is a famous 5.11 in Yosemite – watch Honnold free-solo it here. See a topo for The Passenger by Steph Abegg here.

Honnold recently talked about a few free-solos that few climbers knew about, read the story here. And in fall of last year, he completed the most wild solo link-up in Red Rocks, which covered 60 kilometres, over 32 hours. Of course, he’s best known for his free-solo of Freerider on El Capitan.

Honnold is currently preparing to cycle 3,200 kilometres with Tommy Caldwell. He recently told an audience at the Sheffield DocFest in the U.K., “The two of us are biking from his house in Colorado to Alaska… [undertaking] a few very large, difficult climb objectives along the way. So, it’s basically a 2,000-mile bike ride with quite a bit of hard climbing, culminating in a difficult climb in Alaska.”
