Huge Patagonian Mountain Climbed for First Time

Cuerno Este stands at a little over 2,000 metres and was the final major peak in the Torre del Paine area to get a first ascent

Torre del Paine in Patagonia is famous for its big alpine rock climbs and aesthetic landscapes, and the last major peak in the area has been climbed for its first time.

Sebastian Pelletti, Romano Marcotti, and Pepo Jurado have made the first ascent of Vacaciones Metamórficas, a 600-metre 5.11, which is the first route ever climbed to the summit of Cuerno Este. There are several multi-pitch climbs on the lower walls of the peak, including Bailar con el Viento.

Pelletti and Marcotti had attempted the line earlier this year, but bailed below the headwall. They returned with more gear and Jurado to complete the final few hundred metres. The first peak to be climbed in the massif was Cerro Almirante Nieto back in the 1930s.

Torres del Paine National Park is one of Chile’s largest parks and attracts climbers from around the world every year.
