A team of six climbers are waiting for a weather window to make a push for the summit

Taiwanese climber Grace (Ko-Erh) Tseng is currently ascending the world’s second highest mountain with hopes of becoming the first woman to achieve the feat in winter.

Tseng is one of six climbers that will be making a summit-push this week, the others being guide Nima Gyalzen, Chhiring Sherpa, Dawa Sherpa, Furi Sherpa and Ningma Dorje Tamang.

Tseng, 28, is hoping to become the youngest person in the world to climb the 14 highest peaks, all over 8,000 metres. Her most recent success was on the world’s third highest peak, Kanchenjunga, last fall. Tseng has also climbed Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Manaslu (8,163 m).

Her team are planning to make a push for the summit of K2 on Feb. 24, if the weather cooperates. They will be breaking trail and fixing ropes as they go. All climbers will be using supplementary oxygen.

The first winter ascent of K2 came on Jan. 16, 2021, by 10 Nepalese mountaineers: Nirmal Purja, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Sona Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa and Dawa Tenjing Sherpa.
