June 15, 2010 – Canadian Youths Shine at Nationals

The weekend of June 4, 5, and 6 saw 123 of Canada’s best young climbers converge at the Délire centre d’escalade in Québec City for the C.E.C. Youth Nationals. In previous years, the group of strong climbers coming out of the mature western-based development programs have dominated the event. This year however, a talented team from the relatively new eastern youth climbing programs put in an impressive showing. In particular, Pia Graham from Boulderz in Toronto dominated the female Youth B category when she bagged the second highest highpoint on the finals route that was used for the Junior, Youth A and Youth B females. Graham’s impressive results set the stage for Elise Sethna’s performance. Hailing from the Vsion in Canmore, Sethna cruised to the top of the route and clinched the female Youth A title.

During the weekend, only three climbers topped-out all of their routes: Elise Sethna – Youth A girls, Beth Vince from Peaks in St.Catharines – 12/13 girls, and Elan Jonas McRae from Romper Room in Nanaimo – Youth B boys.

The speed climbing category was dominated by Miles Adamson (Youth A) from Edmonton who not only won his category but also set a gym Speed record of 6.95 seconds.

Participants from this event are chosen to represent Canada in the upcoming IFSC World Youth Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 9-12, 2010.
