June 3, 2010 – Gadd Wades In On Cerro Torre Debacle
A series of questionable decisions during David Lama’s attempt to free Cesare Maestri’s controversial Compressor Route on Cerro Torre have created an international furor in climbing community. Reports suggest that extra bolts were added to the route to accommodate a film crew and fixed ropes were left on the climb. Renowned alpinists Jim Donini and Rolando Garibotti were outraged at these actions with Donini questioning the long-term “consequences of the Lama debacle.” While Gadd does not shy away from condemning the climbing team’s controversial style, he believes that Lama’s alpine inexperience and the film crew’s desire to capture the ascent contributed to the circumstances leading to this unfortunate incident.
