Man Dies Climbing Mount Rainier

A climber collapsed while making ascending near the summit of Rainier on a guided group

A 41-year-old man from Bremerton, Washington, died this week while climbing Mount Rainier (4,392 m), one of America’s most popular summits. The National Park Service (NPS) said he collapsed near the summit on Wednesday morning.

The NPS identified the man as Brian Harper, who was participating in an ascent led by Alpine Ascents International, a licensed guide service. Officials say that after he collapsed, CPR was administered but a pulse could not be found.

The route his team was climbing was the Disappointment Cleaver, the most popular on Rainier. The group he was climbing with had made it to Camp Muir at an elevation of 3,048 metres. After he died, Harper’s body was carried higher up the mountain to where a helicopter could safely retrieve him.

NPS search and rescue teams, along with aviation rangers and climbers with Rainier Mountaineering Inc. worked together to bring Harper’s body down on Thursday morning. Our condolences to Harper’s family and friends.
