Moab is Getting its First Climbing Gym

Thanks to two local climbers, the community of Moab will soon have an indoor climbing space

Moab is one of North America’s most popular rock climbing areas, with countless classic sandstone trad climbs. And now, thanks to two climbers, the town around 6,000 people is getting its first climbing gym.

Locals Kaya Lindsay and Britt Zale are the co-founders of Climb Moab, a gym expected to open this winter. Similar to other small towns found close to world-class climbing, Kaya said that there has always been an urge to have a gym in town and that their plan has been to focus on building a business for the local climbers.

Moab climber Nolan Smythe was working toward building a gym in town at the time of his death. “When he tragically passed away in a climbing accident in 2020, the Moab climbing community was devastated,” Zale told the Climbing Business Journal. “I knew someone needed to step up and take over the project. Dovetailing with my lifelong desire to start my own small business after years of watching my father run one, I announced that I would take on the challenge and started Climb Moab LLC in February 2021.”

Commercial property is expensive in Moab, so Kaya and Zale ended up settling into a garage-type space. The gym walls are being made by Onsight and will have around 15 boulders, 20-foot walls with ropes and board training walls.  “We’re really lucky that, as a small business, people are so excited for us to open,” Kaya said.
