New Everest Base Camp Sign Raises Eyebrows

While climbers seem to be very against the new sign, time will tell whether authorities move it

A new sign has been erected near the base camp of Mount Everest and the reactions range from anger to who cares. The new hard-to-miss sign stands next to a landmark boulder that’s covered in writing, which has long marked the arrival to base camp.

The new coloured sign sits at an elevation of 5,364 metres and features images of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hilary, the first two climbers to reach the summit of Everest. It was put in place by the Pasang Lhamu municipality.

UK mountaineer and climbing guide Kenton Cool shared a photo of the sign as his followers what they thought, as did Everest Today, saying “That iconic signature stone alone is 1000% better than this one.”

One person commented, “The final nail of commercialism firmly planted at the foot of the planets highest reaches. This has been coming since the first companies started selling the summit at any cost. Everest has long since lost its mystique and has been milked as a cash cow.” And another said, “What’s next, a little roller coaster and ferris wheel?!”
