New Ontario Crag Has Great Climbs Up To 5.14

Cave of Wonders is accessible by boat and has over 30 bolted routes from 5.8 to 5.14b/c

Tucked into a remote corner of rolling hills not far from Ottawa is Cave of Wonders, Ontario’s newest crag with routes ranging from 5.8 to 5.14. The rock walls were found last winter during an exploratory day out by Alex Atkin.

Over the past few months, over 30 sport climbs have been developed on the Canadian Shield stone by several climbers, including Daniel Snelson, Jeff Rivard, Julien Santini, Derek Smalls and others. Joe Skopec made the first ascents of several test-piece lines, including Open Sesame 5.14b/c, Smoke and Mirrors 5.14- and Second Wish 5.13d.

About his send of Smoke and Mirrors, Skopec said, “This climb is more than just the grade because of how much work it took to clean and bolt this huge epic roof. The team of developers here have been working super hard to get this place all bolted up and safe.”

The only way to reach Cave of Wonders is by paddling in with a canoe, kayak or paddle board. You can find the detailed approach information on The Crag here. And you can support route development in this part of Ontario by donating to Ottawa Crag Care here.
