New Suggested V16 in Japan is United by Ryuichi Murai

Ryuichi Murai has made the first ascent of United V16 at Mizugaki, Japan. The 25-year-old added the low start to Decided V15, which he made the first ascent of last year. “Finally finished off my nemesis project,” he said. “Everything worked out well. Perfect temperature, perfect friction, and perfect climbing. The success of Decided SD marks a new level in my climbing.”

The only other V16 in Japan is Nayuta at Gero, opened by Dai Koyamada in 2017. Murai has ticked a number of V15 problems, including The Game, Spray of Light, Vanitas, Orochi, Babel, Hydrangea, Practice the Wild and In Search of Time Lost.

Murai has been at the top of the bouldering world for the past few years. In fourth grade, his dad got him into the sport indoors and then took him to local crags where he recognized his son was talented. Murai started training with Koji and Yuka Lida, famous coaches in Japan, and the Japan National Team asked him to join when he was 13.
