Pete Whittaker Free-Soloing on Gritstone

Watch as he makes the first ascent of a new E8, plus listen to some great stories by legend Niall Grimes

In a new video from the Wide Boyz, Pete Whittaker free-solos some classic gritstone routes and makes a first ascent. All the while, legendary trad climber Niall Grimes tells stories about free-soloing and nearly falling.

Grimes, who established several test-piece gear climbs in the 1990s, is the host of Jam Crack, a climbing podcast with over 140 episodes available online, listen here.

Whittaker is one of the world’s leading trad climbers, with rope-solo free ascents on El Capitan, and several single-pitch climbs up to 5.14+, including his first ascent of Crown Royale 5.14d at the Profile Wall in Norway last year. In November, he repeated one of the hardest cracks in the United States, Stranger Than Fiction 5.14. And earlier this year, he made the second ascent of Pure Now E9 6c.
