Sanni McCandless and Alex Honnold Welcome Baby Girl

"We welcomed a new member to the family last month - baby Alice," said Honnold

Sanni McCandless and Alex Honnold have welcomed their second child together with Alice, who was born on Feb. 4 at 6 lbs., 6 oz. Two weeks after Alice was born, McCandless and Honnold’s first daughter, June, turned two.

“We found out I was pregnant at my best friend’s wedding, which I was officiating!” McCandless told People. “We had decided we wanted our kids to be close together in age and had been trying for a few months. We were very happy when we got the good news!”

After the story in People was published, McCandless shared an update on Instagram, saying, “I spent the last 5 days in the hospital on a rollercoaster of emotions, separated from both my babies. It turns out my postpartum recovery was feeling so difficult because I was fighting a fairly serious infection… My heart goes out to the moms I know who had even scarier postpartum diagnosis… Thankfully I’m home now and hoping to be on the other side of this soon.”

Honnold has been one of the world’s leading rock climbers for nearly two decades. In 2008, he made the first free-solo of the Northwest Face of Half Dome in Yosemite, and Moonlight Buttress in Moab. In 2014, he made the first free-solo of El Sendero Luminoso in El Potrero Chico, and the first free-solo of University Wall in Squamish. In 2017, Honnold became the first climber to free-solo El Capitan, which he climbed via the 30-pitch Freerider 5.13.
