Sierra Blair Climbs a Chris Sharma V12 in a Threatened USA Area

A court recently declared that a mining company can take possession of Oak Flat in Arizona

Sierra Blair has repeated Captain Hook V12 in Oak Flat, it was first climbed by Chris Sharma over 20 years ago. ”First send post break,” Blair said about the Captain Hook.

“I saw Captain Hook for the first time when I was 11 years old and remember thinking it was impossible at the time,” said Blair on 8a.nu. “Last season I looked at Captain Hook and saw a hold broke. I put a few tries into the boulder and once again thought it was impossible, especially with the break. I made it a goal to send Captain Hook this season and was excited to get the boulder done in a few sessions. It’s definitely a very proud line at Oak Flat.”

Oak Flat is currently at risk of being destroyed, as a mining company has purchased the land. The Access Fund stated that “the resulting surface crater from this mining operation would be over a mile wide and 1,000 feet deep—consuming Oak Flat and all of its fantastic recreational and cultural resources.”

In a recent article titled ‘Apache Stronghold bid to stop copper mine loses in court’ said, “The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on March 1 ruled that the Forest Service is free to complete a land exchange that will result in the ultimate destruction of Oak Flat, a popular climbing area and campground in an area claimed as a sacred site by the San Carlos tribe as well as White Mountain Apache groups.” Read the article here and learn more from the Access Fund here.
