This is One of the Best Films on Alpinism Ever

An award-winning film about the first ascent of a difficult alpine route on the south face of Nuptse is now available to watch online

In 2017, Hélias Millerioux, Frédéric Degoulet and Niçois Benjamin Guigonnet made the first ascent of a bold new route on Nuptse’s south face over several days. The film about their ascent is one of the best ever made that focuses on alpine climbing.

After acclimatising on Cholatse, they stashed gear below the base of the south face and then started on Oct. 13, climbing to 5,950 metres where they established another camp. They continued at midnight and climbed to 6,581 metres. Strong winds kept them up all night so after a late start on the next day they climbed to 6,800 metres and their third camp; a fourth camp was at 7,013 metres and a fifth was at 7,443 metres. They reached the summit and descended via their route.

The overall technical difficulty of their 2,342-metre route was M5+ WI6. In 2014, all three climbers opened a route on the west face of Siula Chico (6,265 m) in Peru with Robin Revest, which they called Looking for the Void (M7 WI6 R, 865 m).

In 2023, a film about their ascent was released that went on to win several awards. It’s one of the best, most gripping documentaries about an alpine climb ever released. You can watch it on Vimeo here, and watch the trailer below.
