Two Alpinists Ski Down a Big Climbing Route

Two veteran alpinists visit a remote mountain in Norway to ski a 1,500-metre line

Backcountry skiing has grown in popularity over the past decade, but the most extreme lines are still reserved for the very best skiers on their best days. Kilian Jornet, one of the world’s most accomplished big mountain runners and skiers visited the Rauma Valley in Norway in 2023 with David Lindgren.

“It’s one of the most impressive valleys I have ever seen, with big walls on both sides, a paradise for rock climbing in summer and ice climbing in winter… Even if is a more logical place for climbing than skiing, there are some great possibilities there.”

In a new video from Jornet, he and Lindgren ski down a 1,500-metre 5.6 alpine route with 60 degrees of steepness. “I am fully aware that there are adventures that push us out of our comfort zone,” said Jornet about steep skiing.

“That require a lot of experience. Concentration. But personally, it’s these very adventures that make me feel alive. Adventures like the one I had last year with David, climbing up and skiing down Breitind in steep skiing mode.” Watch their descent below.
