Yosemite Rockfall Closes Popular Trail

The trail to Vernal Fall Footbridge is closed until further notice

The extreme weather swings across California are having an effect on many landscapes, with at least one large rockfall taking place in Yosemite National Park.

Travel along the popular trail between Happy Isles and the Vernal Fall Footbridge is closed “until further notice,” park officials have announced. Park authorities said, “Hikers should follow posted detour signs from the Happy Isles shuttle stop (No. 16) to the stock trail behind the Happy Isles Art & Nature Center.”

The trail is known for its views of the famous Merced River, Nevada Fall and Vernal Falls. The Vernal Fall Footbridge is where hikers often stop to catch views of Half Dome and Mist Trail. The round-trip hike usually takes around two hours.

There are several rock climbing zones in the area, including Mist Trail Boulders and routes on Grizzly Peak. The newly formed boulders look unsafe but also look like they potentially have some interesting boulder problems.
