Yosemite’s 2016 Firefall Impresses Onlookers

The annual Firefall drew countless photographers to Yosemite today.

Every year for a few weeks in February, the sun lights up Horsetail Fall in Yosemite. The yearly phenomenon looks like a flow of lava pouring into the valley.

“It’s the way the sun happens to hit that causes the waterfall to glow in such way,” said Yosemite National Park Ranger Ashley Mayer.

The Yosemite park website reads, “In late February, you’ll often see rows of photographers of all levels there catching the last rays of light in the evening.”

The fiery effect varies every year, but this year the park’s deep snow-pack is pumping more volume than normal over Horsetail.
