Six Climbing Whippers, Some Fun and Some Scary

An ice climber nearly decks and one climbers goes for their biggest whip to date

You can go your entire climbing life without taking a whipper if you’re careful enough, but more times than not you’ll run into a crux where falling is inevitable. Here are six climbing whippers, be sure to follow Whipper for more.

Whipper #1

A climber takes a big fall onto a rusty piton and seems to escape with minor scrapes.

Whipper #2

A climber heads up a mixed corner and accidentally knocks themselves off, which results in a big fall after two pitons ripped out.

Whipper #3

Not really a whipper, but this is what happens when the climber is far heavier than the belayer. Solution: use a ground anchor or an Edelrid Ohm.

Whipper #4

A climber at the Playground in Canmore breaks a hold on the classic Swiss Cheese M9. Always wear a helmet at mixed crags.

Whipper #5

A trad climber falls out of a corner and pulls one piece of gear, thankfully they had a crash pad at the base of the climb just in case.

Whipper #6

A climber goes for a fall with the rope behind their leg. If you’re new to climbing, take a lead course to avoid mistakes like this.
