See First Repeat of Burly Squamish 5.14b

Squamish The Chief Rock Climbing

Gabe Lawson made the second ascent of Working Man 5.14b on the Cacodemon Boulder in Squamish in 2022. He recently shared a video of the send. The first ascent was by Jamie Finlayson back in 2014, after bolting it in 2013.

About the route, Finlayson said, “I am calling it Working Man, it climbs an amazing overhanging dihedral which is guarded by a fierce V11 boulder problem. The opening is very tenuous and requires some granite wizardry on a series of underclings, crimps, and terribly high feet. There is a rest before the corner which I originally though would be climbed as a stem corner but after working the route I found it better to climb the prow and move into the corner at the top of the prow.”

Lawson, who also made the first ascent of The Megg V16 last summer, said that he spent a week last year working on Working Man. If you want to see some inspiring climbing, be sure to follow him on Instagram, he’s got some great footage on hard routes.

Finlayson was one of Squamish’s top climbers a decade ago, with repeats of classics like Smell the Glove 5.14c and Supermanboy 5.14c, and boulders like The Reckoning V14. See some of Finlayson’s climbs here.
