Stefano Ghisolfi Tries Chris Sharma’s Sleeping Lion 5.15c

The top Italian climber works the moves on Sharma's first 5.15c first ascent

On a recent trip to Spain for the Siurana Climbing Festival, Italian climber Stefano Ghisolfi got the chance to try out Chris Sharma’s Sleeping Lion 5.15c (9b+) along with Jorge Díaz-Rullo. Located at the famous El Pati crag, Sleeping Lion is a route characterized by stacked double-digit boulder problems separated by poor rest positions. Both tenuous and powerful, the route requires a wide range of skills through its 40 metres to the chains.

Sharma spent over a year projecting Sleeping Lion. The route is his first 5.15c first ascent, and he second 5.15c send – his first being La Dura Dura back in 2013.

Ghisolfi recently released a video of him and Díaz-Rullo working the moves of Sleeping Lion, which you can watch below. The pair make some progress on the intricate, technical, and powerful route, but we’ll all have to wait and see if they return in the future for some proper projecting.

Ghisolfi has one of the world’s most impressive sport climbing ticklists. Earlier this year, he made the first ascent of Excalibur 5.15c in Arco, Italy. In the past, he’s repeated three other 5.15c’s: Perfecto Mundo in Margalef, Change in Flatanger, and Bibliographie in Céüse. In 2022, he repeated Adam Ondra’s Move 5.15b, and put up two 5.15b’s of his own in Italy, The Lonely Mountain and L’arenauta.

Over the past few years, Díaz-Rullo has quickly become one of the world’s top sport climbers. In February, he made the first ascent of his first 5.15c, Mejorando la Samfaina. He then went on to repeat Alex Megos’ The Full Journey 5.15b in Margalef and Bibliographie 5.15c in Céüse.
