Logan Barber Establishes Hardest Crack Down Under

Logan Barber has made the first ascent of a crack project at Mount Buffalo in Australia he’s grading 5.13d.

His new route is called Japanese Deep Freeze and he projected it two years ago with Zac Vertress, according to Planetmountain.com.

At 34, Barber is one of the world’s leading trad climbers. In 2017, he sent Canada’s hardest crack: Cobra Crab 5.14 in Squamish for the 12th ascent.

On Instagram, Barber said: “Sent the crack project! Really good crack boulder route next to Malcolm Matheson’s Chinese Water Torture crack.

“Japanese Deep Freeze 31 [Australia grade for 5.13d] is now Australia’s hardest pure crack climb.”

Matheson’s route is Great Shark Hunt and was first climbed in 1994 and graded 5.13c.

Barber has climbed a number of big and difficult crack climbs, including Golden Gate VI 5.13+ on El Cap in Yosemite.

In China, he made the first ascent of The Firewall on Honeycomb Dome. The steep crack is one of the hardest in the country at 5.13d.
