Legendary Mountaineer Shares Backcountry Wisdom

Chic Scott skis to the Elizabeth Parker Hut in the Canadian Rockies and talks about what the mountains have to offer us

Chic Scott Alpine Club of Canada

In a society that puts excellence above everything else, backcountry skiing and mountaineering legend Chic Scott shows us a whole new way to see the world. “We have created a culture that just worships excellence,” Scott says in a newly released film that you can watch below.

“So many people feel left out because they aren’t the ‘best.’ Being average is just fine. Mountains don’t discriminate. They don’t pick sides. They offer wisdom for the humble, stillness for a weary mind, and a closeness to mother earth that can only be found at their majestic summits. We all come to them as equals, and we all have the right to learn from them.”

Scott has left a major mark on the sport. Some of his adventures and accomplishments include: the first winter ascent of Mount Assiniboine (1967); the first Jasper to Lake Louise via the high-level ski traverse (1967); the Aiguille du Dru North Face in the French Alps (1973); and Myagdi Matha (1973) – the first Himalayan summit reached by a Canadian. He’s currently writing a book about the Alpine Club of Canada.
