Skiing Down a Chamonix Alpine Climb

A highly technical descent down a line that's only been skied a handful of times over the past 25 years

Backcountry conditions have been good around Chamonix this winter, which is why Krister Røhme Kopala and Léo Loux recently teamed up to descend a once-popular alpine route.

“The line is called Voie Fontaine and it’s a climbing route,” said Kopala. “It was first skied by Rémy lé Cluse and Emmanuel Ratouis in 1998. And since then it has been repeated less than five times.”

Kopala said that it wasn’t easy editing nine hours of footage down to the video below, as the entire time out seemed epic. They stayed roped-up for most of the descent, utilising bolted anchors for rappels along the way.

“Skiing these big lines is a whole new world for me and the experience Leo and the other people of Chamonix have is just mind blowing.”
