Tips for Beginner Trad Climbers to Build Confidence

Charlie Woodburn gives us his top beginner's trad tips and in this video tells us the importance of building up confidence in gear

Before you head to the crag with your new rack of nuts and cams, be sure you know how they work. Always wear a helmet. Connect with an experienced instructor and learn how to make solid anchors and how to place protection.

First, spend some time on the ground. Go to the base of a crag and sort out how to fit gear into different features in the rock. Then try some short, easy pitches placing a variety of pieces—not just spring-loaded camming devices, which are easiest to place. Start on grades far below your redpoint.
